Lonely Travels: HOTBoys Kelong - Sibu, Malaysia

Posted on Sunday 27 November 2005

Got back not too long ago.

Very “steamed”, as Alex (one of the co-owners of the kelong) ‘moaned’ after playing mahjong till 4++am with Elvina(she won) and some babes.

And i was there, watching them play till 4++ am, because i had nothing else better to do.

Anyway, i’ll put up a full account of my short trip to the kelong soon.

HOTBOYs Kelong

In the meanwhile, enjoy the pictures: HOTboys Kelong Getaway.
I’ll upload them all when i’ve the time.
(Update 281105: I’ve maxed out my upload limit. Please DO consider the next statement!)

While you’re at it, do consider if you would like to sponser me a Flicker Pro Account.

TRIP REPORT

An unexpected call came the other day, “Who could it be?” i asked myself, staring to the unfamiliar number. I picked up the call, few words exchanged with a chirpy-sounding Eugene, and he got my adrenaline pumping. My trip to HOT-Boys kelong is confirmed.

Another unexpected thing came the other day too, “Hi, this is rena. your kelong trip on Nov 26th is confirmed…..”, reads the SMS. Now, “rena” is a name that is obviously not local, and the “rena” i knew has gone back to her homeland, probably now an OL. The other “rena” i may know is Elvina, and i was right.

And i thought booking directly with HOT-Boys will ensure that i will not end up in the same group as her.

They must be in cahoots. Must be.

Not that i’m not gonna enjoy her company, just that…well, i’m SHY. Haa~ And i’ll probably will need the solitude to enjoy being alone, without anyone knowing who i am, where i am from or what i do. Guessed it’s not gonna happen.

So the week whizzed by and came Saturday. Grabbed my backpack, ate breakfast at the kopitiam and adjourned to Newton Circus Carpark at a freaking-early-bird-have’nt-even-wake-up 0615hrs and i’m even early when i reached.

As the situated time draws nearer, men and youngsters came with their fishing equipment, wearing an earnest smile anticipating the wicked fun they got themselves into.

The mini-bus came with Elvina on-board. Well, a first impression of her is that, “Is she really 29 going to the Three-O?”, She’s petite and small size, i could have mistaken her for a jumpy high school girl!

I introduced myself as i am, not wanting to spoil the fun if she knew who am i so prematurely. Then we climbed aboard the mini-bus for the 1 hour and so ride to Sibu.

Along the way, we stopped for some killer bak ku teh along the road.

Bak ku teh

We continue our journey down the road, greeted by endless oil palm plantations and the occasional roadkill.

We reached the jetty fairly early and waited for sometime before the boat leaves.

View of jetty

As the wind caress my face, i can’t help but think, “Is this what i want? Travelling alone?” But i couldn’t care less, I am here; right here right now. I can’t turn back now. Looking towards the endless horizon of the sea, i kind of enjoy the solitude it offers.

Serene Waters

A 25 minutes boatride brings us to the kelong itself. Looming nearer and nearer, i thought it was those floating type kelong, but i was wrong. It is built on stilts and with a decent platform for avid fishos to fish from.

HOTBOY KELONG!

We harboured beside the kelong, allowing the passengers to step into the kelong. I wasted no time and made a quick tour of the place.

The Kelong

Surprisingly, it’s clean at the lodging area. Sheltered, the whole place looks like the interior of an old kampong house. A big family kampong house.
Beds lined one side, open concept. So everyone sees the 108 sleeping positions you potrayed in your sleep. Rest asssured, there is mattress, a pillow and a blanket. And they’re clean, cleanliness freak, Eugene makes sure that.

Beds and dining area

Right smacked in the middle is the dining area. Which brings us to…

The Food

F A B U L O U S, is the word i will describe the food. No complains about it. For the 2D1N trip, i had 5 meals total. And each one is saliva-inducing good!

Lunch
2nd Lunch

Sorry i could take any pictures of dinner. I was busy eating! And by the time i remembered, the food’s wiped out.

But of course, going to a kelong isn’t about eating right? There are more…

The Fun

Alright, now comes the good part. Because this particular kelong is owned by 3 typical Singaporean men, they made efforts to cater to fishos and non-fishos. Mahjong and poker cards are available at request, should you need to get back some cash for the trip.
Charges: Nominal, didnt notice.

There’s satellite TV with loads of channel that you could find in our own Starhub Cable, but it seems to me Astro of Malaysia gives more channels.
Charges: Free

Resident Jackie Cheung
Also, there’s a karaoke system with 10000 songs (as the owners claimed), there’s even the latest songs!
Charges: 15RM/hr

There’s also a pool table for those who may want to pit against others. But the table’s unstable because of the plank flooring.
Charges: i didnt notice again.

Lastly, if ya going to a kelong, you should be fishing right?

The Fish

There are fishing rods for rent at 25RM/day, should you want to try your hands on fishing. And to state the facts, it’s like sure catch for most of us. Any idiot can get a fish or two.

Some ugly fish they call Remora

At night, light was shone onto the waters to attract squids and bait fishes. During that night, squids are the main fun and it’s good to see fishos exchanging pointers and experiences even they don’t know each other. Its liek the cohesion of the passion for fishing that seems to be holding these people from different walks of life together.

Night fishing

On the second day, i couldn’t resist the temptation to try my hands on fishing. Duly pay up for my rented rod, armed with some prawns as bait. I jigged for some kunnings, and i got 6 big buggers in an hour, twice the length of the kunnings u find in your nasi lemak. And they are considered medium-sized there.

Kunnings

Lastly..

I went there to unwind, but it didnt happen though. Because it was packed full-house that day, but i did managed to find some quiet corner to sit and relax, and enjoy the amazing night sky with glittering stars. The whole kelong itself just oozes relaxation, i tell you. The views, the skies and the management is top notch i must say. Every customer went back satisfied as i can see.

Relax and Unwind

At slightly less than SGD$100 for a 2 days 1 night trip, i highly recommend the place for a short getaway from the rustle and noise of the city life.

Drop me a mail if you wanna go.

HOTBOY 30

I know i will again. =]

NEXT STOP: Bangkok, Thailand

Update 291105: Suddenly i found out i wasn’t the only blogger around at the kelong. Other than Elvina, the mighty LimBueyTor is there too!

Lastly, all is forsaken

Posted on Friday 25 November 2005

I just got back from my granny’s.

Obviously, she and my uncle is pleased to see me again.

We sat and chatted about the recent, till the topic of Last came out.

That’s when i broke the news to them.

As expected, i got ticked off by them….

Grandma: You don’t lie to me.

Uncle: Are you for real???

Me: Ermm…yah…it’s over.

U: Why???! She’s a nice girl, you know?

GM: He’s lying, i tell you.

U: What happened exactly?

M: Well, we just break up like that. Thats all. Feeling’s not there anymore.

U: Aiyo! Sayang leh, 4 years and you broke up with her?? How stupid can you get?

GM: Why? She’s a very nice girl. Ah ma like her alot ah, Ah Boy.

U: Yah lar, she is such a good girl, why you break off with her?

M: Well, we got our own lifestyles now, and we think that we should give each other more space to explore. So we broke up lor.

U: Stupid leh, give each other more space can still maintain as what you people are what…

M: No lar, i wished to be it that way.

Granny is obviously displeased and sad. She refused to look at me.

GM: Her dad likes you alot, that is very good you know?

M: Yah…but i’m not like going to marry her dad ah, Ah Ma.

U: I think there’s more than that, something obviously went wrong. That’s why you two broke up.

Uncle is always spot on. Especially on 4D.

M: No lar… Well, maybe. Maybe i’m too possesive.

U: You love another girl is it?

GM: Must be, that’s why she broke up with you.

M: NO LAR..And being single now, i’ve got more time to do alot more. Don’t worry, still got girls want me lar.

M: Just that, it’s not there anymore. Don’t worry la, Ah Ma. I still maintain contact with her….

U: You better do. If you don’t, you two will slowly drift apart, and there is no hope for you two to reconcile.

GM: YOU BETTER GET HER BACK!!

This one’s a shocker. I’ve never seen her face gone so black before.

U: I tell you, if your expectations aren’t ridiculous high, you are not egoistic or a male chauvinist and you want a good life; YOU BETTER GET HER BACK.

U: Good girls like her don’t come by often. You better think twice.

GM: You better don’t lie to Ah Ma.

Tong Xing Yuan came as a form of help, and their attention got diverted.

Thank God for Cheesy Soap dramas!!

I excused myself, telling them i need to go back office, and slipped away.

————————————————————————-

Well, even at last, i still faced them with pretence.

I lied about almost everything except the breaking up part.

Sometimes, the easiest way out is to musk the pain in your face, swallow your tears and lie.

Plain simple and effective.

Anyway, i’ll be uncontactable over the weekend. Thanks.

the smell of bliss

aroma de romance

Remember the aroma candles i bought last time at Ikea?

The whole week i was sniffing them!

The stuff’s potent, i tell you.

It smells so great that i lighted 5 of them at each go, and i have no need to switch on my table lamp. Savings!

Unfortunately, supplies depleting. 42 of them burnt their last drop of sense-entrancing fuels last night.

Time to get more!
